29th August 2010
So its been a week and a few little things have happened that are worth updating the world on...New Zealand is becoming more and more epic, I am really enjoying my time here, I find the days flying by because I am having such a good time its been a bit of a turnaround from when I first got here for sure. I find I am getting along better and better with people in and out of snow school and am meeting more people learning more.
So I wrote my blog last Saturday, I think its probably because I got released early from work, last weekend wasn’t the most amazing working weekend – in fact I’m not entirely sure I even worked...anyway moving on – this week started well, we trained on Monday and worked on our 360’s we finally have some smaller jumps in the park, I was already frontside 360’ing however I wasn’t doing it correctly so it was really good to work on proper take off, rotational and landing technique. It was fun – I definitely had the frontside spins down. We moved onto backside spins and I pretty much struggled. I have never done a backside 360 off a jump before and really struggled. It might be something mental but I didnt managed to get it down – it sucked but hopefully with more practise I can make it happen.
Tuesday was a sweet powder day!! I rode with Chris we had suucch a good time!! The powder was soo much fun and it was another epic pow day at Mount Ruapehu! We had a little bit of park fun too and that was great! It was pimps and ho’s night at the staff night so I work a bikini (over a t shirt) and went out with everyone. It was a pretty fun night I looked ridiculous!
The rest of the week including today I have been working at the hill and we havent been training. Basically there were about 10-15 instructors out on courses, so we were called into help. I was a ski instructor from Weds – Friday and my lessons initially were poor, but with more confidence from Thursday through to Friday I really had a good time teaching skiing and its definitely got me thinking about doing my Ski Level 1 over here so I am more marketable to snow schools in the future, and also to ensure my ski lessons are too standard. Worried I am not teaching it right but I am definitely getting results and am employing everything I was trained to teach from Kyle getting tips along the way from other instructors.
Other nights out have included Hannah’s birthday which also included the celebratory drinks for all the ski guys passing their level 1!! It was great to see all the Ski Rookies and the TSI guys getting their first of many certifications!! Stoked for them for sure. I remember my first cert and how nervous I was doing it and taking it. It was such a relief to pass so I know how they felt. We had a lovely dinner and Hannah looked like she was having a thoroughly good birthday! All about the good times! I met a few good dudes that night one included Kelly Grant (I think) he was down in Turoa shadowing the level 1 snowboarding evaluations. Top guy! Hoping he comes down again so we can shred because he seems like a bit of a ripper. On Friday after being released from work I managed to get a jib session down with him and we had fun! Great guy to ride with.
On Friday the Level 1 Snowboarders finished and again all the Rookies passed as well as Tony Hill!! We went out in the evening to celebrate but it wasn’t huge!!
Other news includes Josh is down from the UK to visit me for 3 weeks and hopefully he will settle in quickly and get riding!! AND THE MAJOR NEWS is
I GOT THE JOB IN NISKEO JAPAN!!! F*CK YES! I have accepted and unfortunately have to turn down Grouse – VERY EXCITED!
PEACE AND LOVE PEOPLE!!

He's only gone and got a job
22th August 2010
So the highlight news this blog is I have been offered a job!!! WOOP WOOP I had an interview on the 20th with Grouse Mountain Snow School Director Toby Bartlett at 6am. The time was real early. I got up at like 5.50pm in preparation but fell back asleep until he called again at 6.15am and woke me up! I could not believe I fell back asleep so for the first part of the interview I was like ½ asleep still. It felt like such a bad interview, there was one question I couldn’t even answer, describe a time where you have received really bad customer service...I was actually thinking “this should be easy but I cannot actually think of an example”. I told him I couldn’t think of an answer and just came up with examples of bad customer service. I must have said something right, because 2 days later I check my mail in the morning and bang I got the job.
The dilemma now is, there are about 15 other applications for other mountains I would rather work at and I am waiting for responses from Japan too, but I need to get back to Toby at Grouse soon. The best thing about the offer @ Grouse is its Sponsored so I do not need a working holiday visa. I am having a think and will let you know how it goes.
I told some of the guys at Snow school today and made people aware on facebook and it seems like there will be lots of people in Van from the snowboarding community this winter. Tom Summerville is going for Mt Seymour, Chloe is keen for Grouse and Laura from my course maybe having an interview with Grouse too so the cool thing is i could go and probably have people to live with in Van city, and it would be a surreal experience living in a city working in a mountain instead of in a little town! We shall see!
This weekend I havent been up to much apart from working and going to the gym. I have been super tired recently so just been keen to relax and not really go out. Socially all I have done is go to the staff night, it was super fun! Me and Ollie Smith sucked ass when it came to the pool but it was mainly down to the underhanded tactics by Mathieu and Tom S. They snookered me on the black and if you foul on the black in NZ rules you loose the game which SUCKS! So we got knocked out of the first round of the pool tournament. Grant and Robin ended up winning, thanks to some good shots from Robin, but Grant with his underhanded, unsporting tactics of putting people off when they are taking there shots, also helped them lots too. There was some good free food, calamari and pizza – good times! More memorably I met a girl called Courtney Anne – but her nickname was Koo too! It was funny! She was pretty damn cute too! I was introduced to her by Jake I think they are kind of an item or something but we hung out a little during the night and it was fun! We had an epic game of giant jenga, the tower actually got bigger than the both of us and we beat jenga, we got to the point where we couldn’t take off anymore blocks without it definitely falling. Good times! It was a real fun night!!
Training and riding is going ok its very much the same as most weeks just working real hard on our training and our riding. The concentration level is high and its mentally challenging. Its been physically challenging coupling the training with the intense gym programme Robin and I are on for sure!
I am trying to think about what else has been going on, but there isn’t much else!!

Closed days = Sad times
17th August 2010
I didnt think I left it so long since my last blog but I really have. Again this is good because I can focus on the highlights.
Not much has been going on really, in terms of how its going, the training is still pretty intense, we have been working a lot on our rider improvement and self analysis along with movement analysis of other riders and common problems in high end riding. Basically in our evaluation we need to demonstrate an ability to critique a rider and relate it to the skill we have been assigned to teach and deliver it back in a positive to try manner. Its interesting and I am learning loads.
I havent worked a whole lot as the weather has been pretty average and we have been put off rosta with the promise that we will be put back on during the weeks when it gets busy and other staff are out doing examinations.
Socially I havent been upto much, I had a huge night with Baggers – (Maria) she came down with a few friends from Wellington. Maria is a Lawyer in NZ who is from the UK. I met her through a couple of friends at home and she put me in touch with Tony. Funnily enough I had never met the link between me and Tony until Saturday night. We had a real fun night out and there was loads of punters. It was really busy! Fun night for sure.
Not much else has been going on really we have had a fair few closed days where I have done a whole load of nothing. The only real other memories include riding after Saturday night with baggerz having had 3 hours sleep which wasn’t great because the mountain was pissing with rain. In the afternoon I had a great jib session with Chris and Tom Summerville, we hit the box and all learnt a few new tricks, it was definitely a lot of fun!
The mountain itself is in real bad shape, it seems to run in cycles where we get some snow and it gets washed away a couple of days later. Rob mentioned in training this is the worst he has seen the mountain at this point of a season in the 6 winters he has done at Ruapehu. Lets hope it gets better.
I might leave on that bad note, off to start my new training regime, I went to the gym with Rob and Robin and we came up with a new workout routine focusing on 4 core lifts. Lets see how it goes

Im ALIVE
11th August 2010
Its been a while since I have blogged, however I was started to feel like i was writing for the sake of writing and the blog was getting way to day to day’ish. I have left a decent gap between the last blog and the way I see it, the stuff thats most memorable over the week will be written here and the other stuff can just float away into insignificance. To trigger memories I might structure this in a work, training, riding, work after NZ, social and other stuff way...here goes!
So work has been pretty quiet to be honest, since the last time I blogged I worked over the weekend and Saturday was a crappy weather day, so we just went up to the mountain only to be sent down with a 2 hour morning minimum pay. Sunday was much better I got 3 hours of teaching, 1hr with 2 boys teaching them how to turn, 1 with a 24 year old lady and it was her birthday. I got her turning and she was sooo stoked on life, and so was I...it was so rewarding seeing her turn really well! I was stoked. I then had a lesson for another hour with 8 year old Sophie and we had some good fun just boogying on our boards, she was fun and awesome. Working with kids is like soo much fun, I think its partly because I have struggled to grow up and can really let the inner child in me come out!! J I was pretty stoked on teaching after Sunday – to the point where I wrote about how much I loved my job on my facebook status! Teaching people the sport I love it something I am starting to take great pleasure in and I feel like I am getting a little better. I got a bit of acceptable constructive criticism from Mr Hazeldine and it should really help get some of the bad habits out of my teaching. This week I taught skiing for the first time which wasn’t too bad, luckily I only had an 8 yr old kid called Taylor to take care of. Managed to get her stopping and a little bit of turning but I felt like as I was teaching her I was teaching myself...hahahah! It was a guided discovery for both of us, but it actually worked and we had a pretty fun lesson. I definitely have a lot of fun teaching kids for sure!!
So that was work...socially I have been a bit reclusive recently and just stayed at home, partly because I just get really tired, but also I havent been 100% and find it more appealing just relaxing at home. I have been very lazy but should really venture out soon! Its been ages! I have popped over to Miro street a few times and they guys over there are always doing good.
Training has been super intense, and I am starting to get a little overwealmed by it all. I am really struggling to process all the information and actually transfer it into my riding without another thing going wrong. Its massively frustrating and I find myself stressing out during training sessions and not really enjoying it. Instead of displaying any emotion or getting involved and participating i find though i listen to everything being said I remove myself from the class and get in my own world of just frustration. Its not a condusive state to be in to learn and I need to snap out of it, absorb and perform. I feel like I am probably one of the worst riders in my group but I just need to work hard. The teaching aspect always scares me, I find I have lost the battle of being able to teach before I have even been asked to teach because I am so nervous at the thought of delivering a level 3 lesson in front of my peers. I know the information and could deliver the lesson in my head and I feel like I know what I am talking about, I just let nerves get the better of me and its massively frustrating. I am hoping after the full set of training I will have enough information to go into an exam and pass but we just have to see how it goes. One thing I recognise I need to do is clear my head of frustration and not get nervous and believe in myself and my knowledge.
Riding itself has been good we had some incredible powder days this week. Luckily on Monday we had the day off and the mountain had 15cm of fresh snow, so we went up at mid day (me Chris, Toby, Adam) and just had some Wye Street pow day fun, only the lower mountain was open but it was still great and it meant the next day the upper mountain would be sick and full of fresh pow!! The Monday started of well, we thought we were driving home at the chaining point because tobys chains were too big for his wheels, but luckily the roadie hooked us up with a free rental of chains to get us upto the hill. That combined with some sweet powder and a whole load of monkey’ing around on the chairs and a snowflake burger led to an incredible day. Snowflake burgers are immense, I don’t know if I have gone into how amazing these are in one of my blogs. Snowflake is a mountain cafe that make burgers. Their burgers are just immense, foccacia, chicken breast breaded and deep fried, bacon, aioli (garlic mayo), lettuce and onion....take a good day put it in a burger and thats a snowflake burger...Amazing.
Even more amazing was the day after when we got to ride the upper mountain, the powder was like being in the northern hemisphere. Chucking in sweet pow slashes and turns was just awesome!! In terms of freestyle I am trying to make my frontside 3’s more solid with a blind landing and a more horizontal rotation and my backside 3’s are becoming more and more consistent, we need to start chucking off kickers now though for sure!!
In terms of work after NZ I have heard nothing from anyone in Canada, the US have stopped hiring anyone foreign needing a VISA. I am yet to hear from Niseko Base around my interview but he said 3 weeks so we will see. I literally just had an interview with Evergreen Outdoor centre in Hakuba Japan and it went well, I should hear from them in a week but the interviewer said my chances were decent. We shall see. I would much prefer to work in Niseko just because the school sounds more organised and I should get more work.
In terms of other stuff I almost died on the pow day, long story but i went off a 15ft cliff upside down...the worst thing was the rock band came out instead of in, so I was sooo close to landing head first in a rock bed, but just missed it. I scared the shit out of my trainer Rob and to be honest the whole day of training was wasted because I just couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that I was soo stupid and out of control. I feel like I am not demonstrating the control and composure a level 3 rider should. I felt lucky to be alive.
My bindings are in the process of being warranteed but its taking a while I should have some brand new ride SPIs tomorrow though all things going well!!
I suppose the other thing I was thinking about was how good the setup is at Mt Turoa snow school. There is a 100 staff and we have an incredible supervisor who organises things so well. There are people who help but its a big effort and the guy does really well – props to Matt. Not only does he organise staff well, but the development and training of staff and general care about how staff are doing is awesome. He has a bunch of senior senior snow school instructors who are there to pretty much develop the staff and nothing else. The training setup is awesome and I am pretty grateful to be working at such an awesome school.
Thats all I have been thinking about over the past week – I best bounce – peace and love people.

Slow times....
7th August
I think i am blogging for the sake of it really, its saturday, the mountain is massively windy I was meant to be working but have been sent home...sad times!
I havent been upto much really, Wednesday was a closed day so I spent the day writing up some notes and playing a bit of poker. I have managed to sent away my bindings now for warranty as the heel cup has cracked. I am hoping it gets sent back soon because the replacement bindings I have right now absolutely suck!
Finally got myself back to the gym the last couple of days which has been good for the mind. I feel like I have been physically vesilating. I just need to keep active on days where I am not up the mountain. I have a feeling there are a lot more closed days ahead so I need to do more than just watch episodes of TV on my laptop and do nothing. Mentally I need to keep active and not slow down too much. I remember going back to work after Canada and I felt pretty stupid. I dont really want that feeling if I have to go back. I need to start reading again and just keep the mental mind active also.
Thursday was a good day training, we did a freestyle day learning frontside 360s and how to apply skills to freestyle manouvres for our teaching. I attempted to teach and failed miserably yet again, starting to worry whether I am cut out for the teaching aspect of this course but ill give it a try.
I had the day off on Friday so went riding for a bit, rode with Jamie from Canada and we hit up the park, I tried throwing 3's off the kicker but they werent working! There were some sick shredders in the park, but landing on ice didnt help my knee so I rested up most of the day. Didnt get upto much else apart from a few episodes of flash forward and the gym.
Leaves me to today...not sure what I will get up2 but I am more hoping i get some work tomo!
Peace and love people

Yo Yo Yo!
4th August 2010
The majority of time since my last blog I have been pretty ill still so havent been doing a whole lot, hence the delay in my update here from Kune. I was ill on Friday so didnt go to the hill and on Saturday and Sunday I did work, however didn’t get any teach hours, the hill was dead on the weekend. During the weekend I didnt do much apart from watch flash forward and rest. Chris and Hannah arrived on Thursday and it was good to see them for sure!
Really not much else has been going on, with the illness I havent been doing a whole lot of riding but this week I have been slightly better and as a result slightly more active. Monday and Tuesday were spent in training with Rob. Monday was a Pedagogy day where we learnt how to train instructors. The morning was spent indoors understanding how we are assessed and evaluated for Pedagogy and then in the afternoon we went out and practised which was pretty cool. I am starting to see how much this training is going to help our exams with the practical experience, the practise and the training we are receiving. Its all pretty good. Tuesday was spent doing practise teaching and learning how to structure our lessons and teach. My practise teach went terribly but its all good. The amount of knowledge being passed over the two days was soo much my brain was overloaded. Snowboarding is being taken to a whole new technical level.
It was Stueys 21st birthday so we chilled round his, the entire snowschool were there and some more. I invited a random I met called Paulo who has come to NZ just to do some shadow hours so he can do his BASI 2. He was a super chill guy. Spent another staff night at the Turoa lodge. It was pretty similar to most staff nights and thats about it really.
Not much else has been going on, haven’t been going to the gym, I had an awesome interview with Niseko Base Snowsports, and hopefully I can get work for Alex Simpson and get some company out there!! Lets see how we go!!
